XANTHELASMA
Xanthelasma are yellow cholesterol deposits typically around the corners of the eyelids, more common in middle- aged and older adults, including geriatrics.
They are caused by the accumulation of cholesterol rich lipids.
Relevance in Geriatrics:
- Age-related: found in the aging individuals and increased likelihood of dyslipidaemia
- Associated conditions: Underlying conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, liver disease and high blood pressure can contribute to formation of xanthelasma and are more common in older adults.

Diagnosis:
- Xanthelasma can be diagnosed based on its characteristic appearance around the eyelids. Dyslipidaemia can be checked through fasting blood tests.
Management:
Treatment of underlying cause or associated lipid diseases through diet, exercise and cholesterol lowering medications.
Treatment for cosmetic purposes can be done with TCA, cryotherapy, surgical excision. These will only remove the lesions but not treat the underlying cause. If left untreated, the lesions can recur again.
