Lip augmentation is done by taking one’s own fat from the abdomen under the influence of local anesthesia. The fat is then injected in the lips in small amounts. Alternatively, lip augmentation can be done by injecting medical fillers. This is visible for a limited period of about 1 year then it needs to be repeated.
Lip reduction is an office procedure to reduce overly large protruding lips to bring them into sync with the rest of the face. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes about 30 -90 minutes.
This is an outpatient procedure.
The patient may have slightly swollen lips for about one to two weeks, after which it will disappear gradually. Other side effects may be bleeding from the injection sites, swelling and bruising, and / or redness and tenderness at the site of the injection. But these last only a couple of days. With lip fillers the results are immediate and usually the side effects are minimal.
Lip augmentation is usually long lasting, but changes may occur with pregnancy and aging.
Results of fat transfer usually last long, but another session may be required. The outcome of fillers lasts usually for around 6 -9 months.
While the recovery time for each patient varies, most individuals are able to return to daily activities immediately.
