LIPOMA SURGERY
A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour composed of fat cells, typically located just beneath the skin. It usually feels soft, rubbery, moves easily and grows slowly and reach a stable size in a few years.
The overlying skin is usually normal, and lipomas are often painless, unless they press on nerves or impinge on structures. They are mostly commonly found in middle-aged adults, especially those between the ages 40 to 60 years, but can occur at any age, Many people have a single lipoma; in some cases, multiple lipomas may be present (familial / syndromic lipomatosis)
Causes:
The exact causes of Lipoma are not fully understood; several factors can increase the risk though:
- Genetics: Lipomas can run in families.
- Age: most common in the age group 40-60
- Injuries: a previous injury can trigger the formation of a lipoma.

When do I seek a D r?
Any new lump or swelling needs to be examined to ensure it is harmless. In case of rapid growth imaging such as MRI, ultrasound or CT may be required and may be biopsied. In case of impingement on a nerve or structure surgical intervention may be required.
Treatment options include surgical excision, liposuction or Minimal intervention techniques and Injection / non excisional therapy used to shrink lipomas less than 1 inch.
Prognosis: After adequate excision, re-excision (including capsule) recurrence is rare.
