Leg swelling is a common problem seen in geriatrics right from simple water retention to serious underlying conditions like heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, chronic venous insufficiency or lymphedema.
Other factors may include prolonged standing, obesity, Deep vein thrombosis, certain side effects of medications and inflammation.
What to look for?
- Swelling – one sided or both sides.
- Swelling – persistent or increases with gravity / standing.
- Pain, redness or noticeable skin changes.
- Associated breathlessness or fatigue on movement
