CELLULITIS
Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and the subcutaneous tissues (the soft tissue beneath the skin). It usually appears as a red, swollen, warm, and painful area of skin that may spread rapidly if not treated. Cellulitis most often occurs when bacteria enter the skin through a cut, insect bite, burn, or wound.
Symptoms
- Itching, burning, or stinging sensations.
- Redness or inflammation of the skin.
- Swelling, warmth, pain
- Flaking or peeling skin.
- If the condition worsens, fever or decline in functional status.

Treatment
- Antibiotics are the main treatment (oral or intravenous, depending on severity)
- Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce discomfort
- Elevation of the affected limb to reduce swelling
- In severe or recurrent cases, hospitalization may be required
Prevention Tips
- Keep wounds clean and covered
- Moisturize dry skin to prevent cracking
- Treat athlete’s foot or other skin conditions promptly
- Maintain good hygiene
- Control underlying conditions (e.g., diabetes, poor circulation)
When to Seek Medical Help
Seek immediate medical attention if:
- The redness spreads rapidly
- You have a fever or chills
- The area becomes numb, blistered, or dark
- There’s no improvement within 48 hours of starting antibiotics
