BURN DEFORMITIES
Burn deformities are long term structural and functional changes or loss resulting from severe burns, primarily involving skin, soft tissues, bony structures resulting in deep scars, or cause development of more rigid, tight scars known as contractures. Contractures can restrict movement, lead to loss of cosmetic appearance and also cause functional disability.
Here are few common types of deformities post burns:
Tissue loss:
Significant loss of skin, tissue, fat and in some cases, bone can cause malformations like lost ear or nose.
Scarring:
The skin heals in a thick, raised, uneven manner, darker or redder than normal skin.
Contractures:
This is the most common post-burn deformity, wherein the skin becomes tight and pulls together, causing immobility and deformity.

- Flexion contracture – involuntary bending of a joint
- Neck and facial contracture- leads to limited neck movements or visible facial deformity like eyelid eversion.
- Wrist contracture- limited movement of the wrist
- Claw hand – A severe hand deformity resulting from contractures on the hand that affect the hand and fingers.
- Functional issues like difficulty opening the mouth, loss of nose, inability to use hands.
- Treatment for Burn deformities depend upon the severity and location of the deformity.
There are surgical treatments like Skin grafting, Release of contracture, Scar release, Flap surgery, etc and non-surgical procedures like Splinting and Physiotherapy which can help regain functionality and cosmetic appearance with some limitations.
Both surgical and non-surgical treatments can be used as standalone or combination to improve quality of life.
